CYCLE OF LIFE

  • An exercise in movement and breath, movement and sound to help anchor the body to the earth while opening it to the world.

This exercise has its origins in the Japanese practice of Shintaido. The addition of sounds was developed by Chloë Goodchild in her practice of The Naked Voice.

This series of chained movements connects us first to the earth, our origin, before opening us to the sky and the world, to our dreams, our intentions, our ability to visualise and manifest and our ability to let go of everything before returning to the earth.

The effect of the cycle is to mobilise the body in many directions, to connect the movement of the breath to the movement of the body, to feel the whole body and to warm up the voice.

Tips for practising this cycle: repeat the cycle several times so that the movements become more and more fluid and fulfilled. Explore how the timbre of the voice changes throughout the cycle. Use this cycle at the beginning of the day as a warm-up or before an activity that requires concentration and presence.

  • BETWEEN EARTH AND SKY

  • A journey of exploration from the anchoring of the body to the earth to the top of the skull that rises to the sky: discovering the 4 points of support – the feet, the animal tail, the plumb line; becoming aware of the spine and its root at the sacrum; experiencing the head that floats to the sky and the skeleton that hangs down to the ground.

The skeleton has evolved to be in its verticality with the least physical effort. When you explore this dynamic balance between gravity and flight, space opens up within you, allowing for an amplified ease of movement.

This video guides you to explore the different points and coordinates along the body and in space. It is strongly recommended that you repeat the exploration several times and stop the video to take more time at each step to better feel the effects of each point of attention. It is not a question of mastering the proposition so that your verticality becomes a fixed posture, but of always putting yourself in a state of research in order to find a free and creative mobility at home without effort.

  • AWAKENING BODY AWARENESS THROUGH FREE MOVEMENT

  • With its origins in the movement meditation practice, the 5 Rhythms Dance, this exercise invites you to let go of any ideas of doing well and expectations of what will emerge when you move, and to invite spontaneity and creativity to your body.

You are invited to give your attention to one part of the body at a time and simply explore how that part can and will move in the present moment. There is no such thing as doing it wrong and there is no such thing as doing it right. We simply follow what emerges in order to awaken a fuller awareness of our body in its mobility and to let our innate creativity emerge.

We follow an exploration map that guides us from the top down, to open the body to movement and space before anchoring it in the feet on the floor: head, shoulders, elbows, hands, spine, hips and pelvis, knees, feet.

You can follow this video without watching it guided by the words of the facilitator. You can choose your own music to inspire you. You can do the exercise in 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, however long you want – as time permits, as you feel the need.

Above all, seek pleasure in your movements, welcome the joy of being in free movement.

  • CONSCIOUS BREATHING

  • Breathing comes before the voice. When done consciously, it can become the first and vital step to obtaining a relaxed body. A relaxed body not only feels nice: it can also help achieve greater sonority and ease in the use of the voice.

  • Using the experiences and the same inward focus from the previous exercises, we take a closer look at the chest as a massive and powerful resonator that can support our use of the voice, allowing to reduce the strain on the throat.
